SABHA CANTEEN MEALS PRICE TREND OVER THE YEARS-AN ANALYSIS

Chennai Sangeetha Sabha Canteen Price trend-An Analysis

Mint Padmanabhan, Mountbatten Srinivasan, Gnanambiga Rajan and Meenambiga Baskaran were notable top ranking Sangeetha season caterers in Chennai till last year. This year Mint Padmanabhan is absent from the scene. Pattappa has joined the coveted league.

Mint Padmanabhan catered to food Rasikas of Music Academy till last year. This December Pattappa has taken over charge from him.

Srinivasan, s/o Mountbatten Mani Iyer serves food at Parthasarathy Sabha’s canteen at Vidya Bharati kalyana mandap, Beema Sena Street, Mylapore.

Gnanambiga Rajan takes care of food rasikas at Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha @Vani Mahal, T. Nagar.

Meenambiga Baskaran caters to rasikas @Mylapore Fine Arts Club, Mylapore.

I have ignored Narada Gana Sabha for this analysis, as the sabha had seen at least 3 caterers in the past.

Mountbatten Srinivasan tops the chart always with skyrocketing price.

The second rank for higher pricing goes to Mint Padmanabhan and Pattappa.

Gnanambiga Rajan stands at third place and Meenambiga Baskaran is the most economical caterer among sabha canteen toppers.

Now for analysis I am comparing the price of meals from 2014 to 2018. See attached image.

There was 68% increase in meals price in Parthasarathy Sabha canteen this year when compared to 2014. (Assumed that meals price was Rs.250 in 2014)

Music Academy price trend shows an increase of 50%.

Vani Mahal increased its lunch price by 43%.

Mylapore Fine Arts has beaten the inflation with an increase of just 13.50% over 5 years.

     Started my Sangeetha Sabha Canteen food round up for this year with Gnanambiga @Vani Mahal. Relished traditional Tanjore style banana leaf full meals.

Gnanambika Canteen

      Sweetened Milk Khova was of right consistency and taste.
     
      Cucumber Raita (Vellari Pachadi) was fresh and tender.
     
      Broad beans (Avaraikai) shallow fried with sprinkled coconut gratings was a visual delight. The greenish colour of raw broad beans was retained even after cooking. The taste was the same which I used to have in my childhood. Ven poosani koottu (Ash gourd gravy) with mochai kottai (a type of beans) was good.

      Fried Brinjal masala (Vathakkal) was excellent with right amount of spiciness.

      Radish Sambar, Toamto Rasam, Vendaikai (ladies finger) Kara Kuzhambu were of homely taste.

   
Overall, the meals was healthy & tasty with less masalas. Right quantity of salt and spice (karam) in the meals helped to relish the original taste of other ingredients.

        Meals in unlimited. So you can ask for extra servings without hesitation.

        Each and every dish were served piping hot, right from the stove.

        Cost-Rs.180 per head.

Coffee is always addictive. Coffee counter was live even during peak lunch hour. From 4 P.M. to 9.30 P.M., sweet, karam and tiffin varieties will be served. Podi dosa and Adai aviyal are must try dishes here.

WHAT THEY OFFER?

            Piping hot, traditional, tasty and healthy vegetarian food is available till the end of music season. You will get authentic filter coffee as early as 5 A.M. and traditional banana leaf meals starting from 10.30 A.M. Evenings are dedicated for tongue tingling varieties of sweets & snacks made in front of you. Non vegetarians please excuse.

DO I NEED TO HAVE CONCERT PASS TO ENTER THE CANTEEN?

‘NO’. Sabhas usually welcome foodies with red carpet. They have separate entrance for canteens. Only Mylapore Fine Arts used to restrict entry during evenings.

AMBIENCE & TASTE

            In major Sabha canteens, ambience and food variety & quality are comparable to that of fine dining restos. Cost is also ditto.

                        Cost wise, Mount Mani Iyer’s is the top scorer.

                        Gnanambiga is VFM.

In 2016, Coffee was priced at Rs.25 to Rs.40 in different canteens. Meals cost varied from Rs.150 to 300. Price wise top scorer was Mountbatten Mani Iyer @Rs.550 for New Year Special lunch.

The early bird for this season is Gnanambiga (@Vani Mahal). Their doors will open for foodies on 10^th December 2017.

There is a strong awareness on organic food among the people, at least in major cities. Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and New Delhi are places where organic food has started claiming considerable market share. Organic rice, millets, pulses, flours, jaggery, honey, milk, vegetables and fruits are available in exclusive organic shops. Even organic juices, dress materials, snacks are gaining popularity. States like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarkhand are the major hubs for organic cultivation. Produce from these places are transported to other potential markets. Low production, transportation costs and above all the marketer's penchant for catering to a niche market keeps the prices of organic food products sky high. In spite of premium pricing the demand for organic food products is growing. In Chennai there were only two or three organic shops five years back. As on today the count will cross 50 easily. As many people are asking me about the presence of organic food shops in their areas, I thought it fit to compile a list of organic food shops in Chennai. 

Before going into the list of shops I will give a bird's eye view on major organic food brands which caters to their clientele in Chennai.

                                        

1. Morarka Organics : Almost all the ingredients needed in the process of day to day cooking are available under their sub brand downtoearthorganic .

 2. 24 mantra: 24 mantra is marketing a wide range of organic food products. 24 mantra is a major producer of organic food products.

3. timbaktu-organic : When compared to Morarka organics and 24 mantra, timbaktu organic has a different portfolio of products. While the first two brands are keen to market conventional food products that are produced using organic methods, timbaktu organic is a major producer of millets. Foxtail millet, Finger millet (Raagi), Great millet (Jowar), Bajra and millet flours are their flagship products. They also sell unpolished rice, red rice, pigeon pea, green gram, horse gram, jaggery and peanut based products.

In my opinion, the timbaktu organic products are priced moderately and give the consumer value for money. They maintain a high quality of products. This brand is always my first choice.

4. earth360 : This is also a good brand to buy millets. Chennai based " Nalla Keerai " (Good greens) organisation sells the millets procured from earth 360 through their millets sunday programme.

5. Pronature : Pronature has a decent range of organic products other than millets.

6. Parambaryam, Bhojanam are minor brands that cater to the Tamil Nadu market primarily. These two brands are owned by Chengalpet based Arogyam Organics.(Mobile: 9942796305). Millets and millet flours are sold under the brand name of Parambaryam (meaning heritage). Products like rice, dal varieties, chillies, chilli powder, coriander, coriander powder, cow peas are sold under the brand name of Bhojanam. 

7. Organic tattva : I spotted the products of Organic tattva in a few branches of heritage Fresh Supermarket.

8. Proorganic : Pro organic products are available in Nilgiris, heritage Fresh and Spencers supermarkets.

Online organic food seller

 Vaer Organic  is the major online organic store in Chennai. They don't have an offline presence. Apart from organic groceries and millets they also sell organic vegetables and fruits. Customers can order the products by calling 9444667070 between 10 A.M. and 9 P.M. . Monday is weekly holiday. They have three delivery slots-3-5 p.m., 5-7 p.m. and  7-9 p.m. The customer can choose a convenient slot for receiving the products. They operate on cash on delivery (COD) basis.



Dhanyam Organic Super Store accepts order through mobile (98400 32562 ) and landline (044-28157654). People from anywhere in Chennai can contact dhanyam for door delivery of organic food products.

Nalla keerai sells millets through their Millets Sunday programme. Online orders for millets requirement need to be sent well in advance. Millets are distributed once in a month on a designated Sunday through their volunteers spread over 55 spots around Chennai. They operate on cash on delivery (COD) basis.
